TEDCenter Addresses Economic Development Needs in CNY

In a tough economy, there are usually too many workers for too few available jobs. But in fields like engineering, information technologies, and medical care, the opposite may be true: there is often a shortage of qualified workers for open positions. The newly-formed TEDCenter at University College hopes to turn this around in Central New York. “We have long heard employers say they are unable to find employees with the skills the business needs to be competitive,” says Karen DeJarnette, who was recently named director of the Talent and Education Development Center (TEDCenter), housed at UC. “University College’s investment in the TEDCenter will help to close that gap.”

The TEDCenter, formerly the WorkKeys Center, will provide programming to support the workforce needs of businesses, as well as career development opportunities for Central New Yorkers. By working with employers and regional development organizations, the TEDCenter will identify the organizations’ critical business requirements. It will then create customized and onsite programs to align company needs with worker skillsets. The TEDCenter plans to provide both credit and noncredit programs and certifications.

Years of experience have given DeJarnette a broad perspective on the workforce dynamics of the Central New York market. Her previous positions include director of Workforce Development for Empire State Development, and vice president of training and corporate development for Manufacturers Association of Central New York. She has also worked for Carrier Corporation and as an adjunct professor at SU’s School of Information Studies.

DeJarnette earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and master’s degrees in business administration and information management from Syracuse University. She is assisted by Andrea German-Willis, associate director at the TEDCenter.
