Worried about going back to school?
Five ways to overcome your fears

Going back to college as an adult can be a challenge, but at University College, you’re in good company. Non-traditional students are well represented on the SU campus, and can be an excellent support system for those who are intimidated by the demands of being an adult student. You’ll probably find that your fellow part-time students felt just as uneasy about fitting in and managing the workload when they started their college classes.

Peer Mentors

The Peer Mentoring Program was created to help new UC students adjust to the unique challenges of becoming a part-time student. New students have the opportunity to connect with a current student who provides perspective and advice on juggling the demands of work, family, school, and other commitments. The dream of a college education has become a reality for many like you...now it’s your turn!

Student mentors are excited about working with you, and can be valuable resources for navigating the unfamiliar places and procedures you encounter as you settle in to your new role as a student. If you’re interested in having a mentor, call University College at 315-443-9378 and we’ll get you hooked up!

Scholarships come through for UC students

University College students can continue to count on financial support from a number of different sources this year. Eta Pi Upsilon awarded 15 scholarships to UC women, and two new scholarships were introduced recently that are specifically targeted to UC students. The goal of UC’s financial aid office is to help students avoid out-of-pocket expenses while they study part-time at SU, and these scholarships will go a long way in helping our students finance their education.

Fifteen scholarship winners were recognized at Eta Pi Upsilon’s annual brunch at Drumlins on November 12. The SU women’s honorary society provides scholarships to women studying part time through University College. Eta Pi is the country’s oldest undergraduate honorary, established in 1898 to recognize women who live the ideals of scholarship, leadership, service, and loyalty to SU.

Each year, Eta Pi grants scholarships worth 6 credits to women students who deserve recognition for academic achievement and perseverance. At the brunch, recipients are invited to the podium to share their stories and express their gratitude for the financial assistance that makes their educational journey a little easier. They are often overcome with emotion as they relate the challenges faced and dreams fulfilled as they advance in their degree program. Eta Pi scholarships cover two courses and can make a huge difference in the ability of students to progress toward degrees, particularly if they are unemployed, underemployed, or single parents.

In order to qualify for Eta Pi Upsilon scholarships, women must have been enrolled at UC for two semesters and do well academically. Though the organization is no longer active on campus, Eta Pi Upsilon’s Endowed Scholarship Fund will continue in perpetuity to support vulnerable students like women who must juggle many responsibilities while earning a degree. Eta Pi is the largest provider of scholarships at University College.

The new additions introduced this year at University College include a 3-credit scholarship from Susan Klenk that will be awarded to an outstanding student in the Nutrition program at the David B. Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics. There is also a $1000 a year scholarship for a female math or science student, given anonymously through the CNY Community Foundation in memory of Virginia Armstrong.
