A College Degree Still Helps During the Recession

A new way to prepare for an interviewThe value of a college degree in a recession has been held up to much scrutiny lately, as unemployment remains high. But according to Alexandra Tilsley of Inside Higher Ed, a report from the Pew Economic Mobility Project confirms that a college degree still helps people find better jobs and earn more money. The report’s data was drawn from the 2003-2011 U.S. Census and focused on recent graduates. It found that securing well-paying jobs has been more difficult in the current recession, but those with college degrees have fared better than those without degrees. In fact, any amount of postsecondary education—even associate degrees—can improve employment outcomes.

8 Secrets of Successful College Students

Returning to college as an adult presents many challenges, but some of them are universal among students of all ages. Attending a college with a good reputation is important, but even more important is to get the most out of your experience and your degree. Ken Bain, a teacher and historian, wrote a book on the subject. What the Best College Students Do recognizes different types of learners and provides insight into the traits and values that successful students—young and old—share.

Here’s what he found:

1. Pursue passion, not As.
2. Get comfortable with failure.
3. Make a personal connection to your studies.
4. Read and think actively.
5. Ask big questions.
6. Cultivate empathy for others.
7. Set goals and make them real.
8. Find a way to contribute.

To learn more about each strategy, check out Annie Murphy Pauls article in the March 13 edition of TIME.com .
